The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy provides an opportunity for the chapter to enrich and enhance the education of young girls from ages 11-14 that attend public school in the Midlands area; the program’s major emphases are mathematics, science and technology, and helping young women to excel and pursue careers in these areas. Additionally, the program offers mentoring, educational activities, service learning, and parent education opportunities to the participants.
The Delta Academy of the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. plans and implements varied activities based upon the needs of the young ladies that participate in this signature program. The activities implemented most often include workshops related to healthy lifestyles (i.e. mentally, physically, and emotionally), etiquette and leadership, college exposure, and cultural events.
The purpose of Delta Day is to cover basic and advanced social action and political awareness topics that affect the African-American community. We must be educated and informed on the political and social issues so that we can strengthen our ability to influence the local, state, and national arena. Delta Day will provide an opportunity to share information and educate ourselves on issues that impact our families and communities.
Delta GEMS is an expansion of The Dr. Betty Shabaaz Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow. The program was created to catch the dreams of African American at-risk, adolescent girls aged 14-18. Delta GEMS provides the framework to actualize those dreams through the performance of specific tasks that develop a positive attitude. The goals for Delta GEMS are:
- To instill the need to excel academically;
- To provide tools that enable girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success;
- To assist girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures high school and beyond; and
- To create compassionate, caring, and community minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities.
The Delta GEMS framework is composed of five major components (Scholarship, Sisterhood, Show Me the Money, Service, and Infinitely Complete), forming a road map for college and career planning. Topics within the five major components are designed to provide interactive lessons and activities that provide opportunities for self-reflection and individual growth.
